Is the Tablet Revolution Comming?
I've been using my Tablet PC for the past four years now and and despite my efforst to promote and sell them it appears the Tablet PC platform has remained in just the niche markets usually being the education and medical field. Some proclaim 2010 will be the year of the tablet especcially with this flurry of excitment surrounding these new netbooks which still begs the question...when did netbooks get big?
For the time being though CNET still believes Tablets have a ways to go before everybody is rushing to their local best buy to relinquish their wallets to yet another device when most of us already have our phones and current laptops. Check out the article for yourself.

Seeking the Perfect Laptop for College

As with any new journey, one must equip oneself with the proper equipment to make their adventure a success. If you were going backpacking in Europe, you would want the proper backpack. If you were camping at Yellowstone, you would seek the appropriate tent. Moreover, if you’re a student in college you need the perfect to laptop to handle the many tasks that any typical student would encounter on a daily basis.
As I head back to school to earn my MBA I find myself in a position to buy a new computer. Rifling through the numerous ads and online resources I remember the difficulty associated with buying that new laptop. I recall researching notebooks for about a month last time before eventually purchasing my Lenovo X41 Tablet PC. This time I plan to follow the same process in order to make the best decision possible.
As I begin my process of narrowing down all possible contenders there are a few things I plan to consider this time around. Should I stick with the Tablet PC platform? After my purchase of an iphone do I go against everything I once stood for and purchase an Apple notebook? What’s going to be more important this time battery life, screen size, portability. There’s a lot for me to consider this time and I look forward to sharing my findings as I start this new adventure!

Motion Computing announces the C5 Clinical Assistant Tablet PC
Tablet PC + Medical/Pharmaceutical Industry = a very happy Jason!
Tablet PCs are no stranger to the medical world and it's these vertical markets that have allowed Tablet PCs to continue fighting in the shadows for so long before making their appearance into the mainsteam. Although a tablet is nothing new, a properly developed device specifically tailored to those is the medical profession is a concept that has needed some extra attention for quite some time now. Why these devices have not been implemented into the medical scene as quickly as I would like probably has to due with many factors including financial and budget requirements but it just makes too much sense not to have Tablet PCs in this industry!
Strictly speaking from the business side of things, the cost effectiveness and possible increase in efficiency Tablet PCs could provide are factors that just can't be ignored. Quite frankly I am surprised that so many hospitals still rely heavily on paper. Incorporating my own experience in a pharmacy has also led to the development of a vision where scripts become digitalized and are sent immediately to the patent's pharmacist of choice with the click of a button.
But enough rambling about Tablet PCs and the medical industry for now! (I have midterms to study for after all) Check out what Motion Computing has in store for all you future practitioners, nurses, PAs, and PTs (to just name a few)!

Going Paperless Not Such a Good Idea?

After using a Tablet PC for over a year now the rush of rotating the screen and scribbling away with my stylus has lost some of its flare and pizazz. My MIS class even helped me to realize that despite how much we may invest in some new piece of technology, if it does not improve our well being and live up to our expectations we must be willing to suck it up and say "It doesn't work and I don't want it." I suppose this is why I stopped using my Tablet PC (I still use and love it as a very portable notebook) as often as I once did.
My recent experiences reveal that productivity increases when I use it more as a notebook and less as a Tablet PC. Of course, when scenarios arise that absolutely require a Tablet PC to ensure success and efficient use of time I joyously perform that magical rotate and flip maneuver. However, when I contemplate whether I can perform an activity faster in notebook mode or tablet mode, I discover few situations where tablet mode is the best possible choice (currently).
When the Tablet PC was new it was instinctive to try to squeeze every bit of juice out of it it. I would switch to tablet mode whenever I could and infrequently questioned whether such actions were the best possible use of my time and energy. Previously, I viewed my Tablet PC as a Tablet PC first and then as a notebook second. This was a mistake, and currently I view it as a light portable notebook that doubles as Tablet PC.
With that said, I have also retreated back to former methods that involve the use of paper. I have found that reading real textbooks (instead of ebooks) and peforming homework on notebook paper (and then scanning it as a backup) has actually increased my performance in school. My personality seems to place higher value on those items decorated with blank ink than documents that are displayed on a computer screen. Of course I have reduced my paper consumption and now save the printing for high priority items only. It seems their physical existence is directly linked to my subconscious priority assigning scheme. Therefore I am much more likely to read something that I have printed out than an item that sits hidden somewhere on my notebook/ Tablet PC.
These are just my experiences but it seems I am not alone....
"
Print important e-mails and reports! Research shows that people are less likely to understand material or find it interesting if they read it on screen, compared with on paper. And a stack of a paper serves as a reminder."Of course this is different for everyone but I personally find I am less stressed and more productive when I use a system that integrates both paper and paperless items. Finding a happy medium is key here and each individual must devote some time and energy to discover which levles are appropriate for them. Only then can we surely become more productive.
Note: My New Cingular 8525 PDA/Cell Phone has helped me enormously in putting aside many activities that once required my Tablet PC. It has opened up the possibility of simply carrying it with a file folder to important events. My previous thought process was that since I was already bringing my Tablet PC (as it was the soul guardian of my schedule and to-do/next actions lists) I might as well load/scan all items into it and carry just that versus carrying the Tablet PC AND a file folder. Although it made sense at the time I find my new methodology to be much more reliable and practical. Expect my full impressions on this new device sometime next week!Labels: Paperless, Productivity, Tablet PC

Lenovo X60 Tablet PC! I'm so Excited!
I'm so excited, and I just can't hide it! I'm about to lose control and I think I like it! Why all the excitement? Well technology always brings out the little kid in me and seems to trigger a part of my neural cortex that just wants to dance YEAH! New electronics and gadgets just seem to always take me to this utopia where all my technology dreams become a reality. Well
Lenovo has assisted tremendously in this dream with their latest release of the new
X60 Tablet PC!
I own and use a
Lenovo X41 Tablet PC everyday as a student to take notes, record lectures, make presentations, and create those adventurous mind maps. As a student with a Tablet PC, for over a year now, I have observed and shared with numerous others the benefits a Tablet PC can provide. I even ran a Tablet PC consulting operation for some time where I would help students pick out the Tablet PC best suited for them and then most importantly demonstrate how to take advantage of all the features a Tablet PC can provide.
My tablet is essentially a 3.2 lb 100+ subject notebook, a collection of digital highlighters and pens that not even staples can compete with, a digital voice and lecture recorder that not only captures all those important in class moments but also sync's them with my class notes and
most importantly allows me to easily play Sudoku and browse the internet from my bed without a mouse!
I can go on and on but the
Lenovo X41 Tablet PC has been at the center of all this. It has created numerous opportunities that has introduced me to people, groups, and companies I would have never dreamed of! It was even the motivation for this entire DorkoTech site and blog at one point in time. Sure all of this would have happened with just about any Tablet PC purchase , as I would like to think my entrepreneurship personality offered some contributions, but my X41 has been there since day one. I've talked numerously about the things I like (and don't like) about it on this blog and will continue to share those experiences.
But it has been over a year now...and it seems my Tablet is ready to grow up.
Lenovo's introduction of the
X60 brings a whole new level to the Tablet PC community. Their first go at tablets really made people look at tablets differently (if only Microsoft could get it right the first time...) . No longer were they seen as funny expensive laptops that had rotating screens but instead emerged as ultra portables that could keep up with the rest of their competitors in any business, medical or academic field
but also offered the option to do all this with a pen! The
X60 will continue to improve on this perception and I eagerly look forward to the day when I can afford to trade in my X41 for what should be one of the best new tablets out there!
The reason for my excitement I guess should be quite clear...If the X41, as my partner in business, has established the foundation for my most recent success, imagine the effect an X60 in my hands will have in the future...

Toshiba Tablet PC To Have Newgen Healthcare Solution
"The combination is meant for doctors, medical professionals and practitioners requiring anytime, anywhere access to documents."I've always known there to be many great software packages for doctors and the medical community, but having the hardware distributor (
Toshiba in this case) actually creating and developing their own health care solutions is something entirely new for me.
Motion Computing has been the best at working with doctors and such software companies, that tailor their applications towards the medical community, but they never took the leap to develop the applications themselves. I don't criticize this behavior though as the market here is still quite isolated. However we are all witnesses to this digital transformation that is rapidly occurring. Digital X-ray, paperless records, online access to your health care records, it is all shaping the medical community into a digital interconnected network. As a MIS minor I am quickly learning how these systems and technologies can improve the care doctors can provide and assist them in their everyday diagnosis and I am excited at the numerous opportunities they will provide.
Indeed the Tablet PC is now a major player in this transformation and I look forward to see which other hardware companies realize the true potential of this market. I do tip my hat, for the moment, to
Toshiba for their dedication to the the medical community and look forward to see exactly where they proceed with this.
